About this tool

A voice memo for a colleague, a quick podcast intro, a pronunciation sample, a reminder to yourself — sometimes you just need to record your voice online without installing anything. This free online voice recorder captures audio from any microphone your browser can see, shows a live level meter so you know the mic is actually picking you up, and lets you pause and resume as many times as you like before stopping. Each take appears in a list with a player, a size and a download button, so you can record several versions and keep the best one.

The recording is encoded in your browser using the built-in MediaRecorder API: WebM/Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, or MP4/AAC on Safari and iPhone. Opus is extremely efficient — about half a megabyte per minute — and plays in every modern player and messaging app. Because the audio is processed on your device, nothing is uploaded, no account is needed and there is no length limit beyond your device's memory. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

How to record your voice

  1. Click Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Speak — the meter shows your level. Use Pause and Resume to skip breaks, then press Stop.
  3. Play the take back, then click Download to save it, or record another take.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my recordings saved?

Only in your browser's memory, on your device, until you download them. Nothing is uploaded to ToolDesk or anyone else. Recordings disappear when you close or reload the page, so press Download on any take you want to keep before you leave.

Why is the file WebM or M4A instead of MP3?

Browsers record using their built-in MediaRecorder, which produces WebM with the Opus codec in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and MP4/AAC (saved as .m4a) in Safari. Encoding to MP3 is not something the browser offers natively. Both formats play in modern players and upload fine to most services; if you need MP3, convert the file with a desktop app such as Audacity or VLC.

How long can I record?

There is no built-in time limit. Audio is compressed as it is captured — roughly 0.5 MB per minute at the default quality — so even an hour-long recording fits comfortably in memory. Keep the tab open and your device awake while recording; some phones pause background tabs after a few minutes.

The browser says microphone access is blocked. What do I do?

Click the lock or settings icon in the address bar, find the Microphone permission for tooldesk.cc and set it to Allow, then press Record again. On Windows and macOS also check the system privacy settings, which can block the whole browser from using the microphone. If another app such as a video call is using the mic, close it first.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Chrome and Firefox on Android, and Safari on iOS 14.3 or newer, all support in-browser recording. On an iPhone the file is saved as M4A, which opens directly in Voice Memos, Files and Messages. Hold the phone normally and keep the screen on; switching apps mid-recording may stop the microphone.
