About this tool
Pricing a holiday, checking a freelance invoice, or wondering whether that overseas listing is really a bargain — a quick, honest exchange rate answers all of it. This free currency converter covers the US dollar, euro, pound, yen, Swiss franc, Canadian and Australian dollars and more than 20 other currencies, and converts between any pair in both directions. The rates are the daily reference rates published by the European Central Bank, fetched from the open Frankfurter API and cached in your browser for 12 hours, so the page is fast and the rate date is always shown under the result. Alongside the headline figure you get the rate both ways and a quick table for 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 units — useful for a wallet card before a trip.
One thing to be clear about: these are reference rates, not live market prices, and they exclude the margin your bank or card adds. That makes them ideal for estimates, budgeting and judging whether a quoted rate is fair, but not for trading or settling payments. All the arithmetic runs in your browser; the only thing downloaded is the small table of rates.
How to convert currency
- Type an amount and pick the from currency — focus the drop-down and start typing a code like EUR or JPY to jump to it.
- Pick the to currency; the result, the rate in both directions and the quick table update instantly.
- Press ⇄ to swap the pair, and check the rate date under the result to see which ECB publication the figures come from.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From the Frankfurter API (frankfurter.dev), an open service that republishes the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. The ECB publishes one set of rates each working day around 16:00 CET, so the figures here are daily reference rates rather than live market quotes.
Why is the result different from what my bank charged?
Banks, card networks and exchange bureaus add a margin on top of the mid-market rate and sometimes a fixed fee, typically costing 1 to 4 percent more than the reference rate. This converter shows the margin-free reference rate, which is the right number to judge how good an offer is, not the amount you will actually be charged.
Is my amount sent to a server?
No. The page downloads one small table of rates against the US dollar, then every conversion you type is calculated locally in your browser with the formula amount × rate(to) ÷ rate(from). The amounts and currency pairs you enter are never transmitted anywhere.
How often are the rates updated?
The rates are fetched when the page loads and cached in your browser for 12 hours to keep the tool fast. The rate date shown under the result tells you exactly which ECB publication day the figures belong to; rates do not change over weekends or on ECB holidays.
Can I use these rates for trading or invoicing?
They are suitable for estimates, budgeting, travel planning and sanity-checking quotes, and the ECB reference rate is widely accepted for accounting purposes. They are not real-time prices and should not be used to time trades or settle transactions — use the rate your bank, broker or payment provider actually applies.
